As I had mentioned in my first post, Who and What is Prepping Mom, many times when you mention prepping you get crazy looks, rolling eyes, and raised eyebrows!
While many people envision wild-eyed "crazies" holed up in the corner of a bunker eating outdated cans of beans, this is not your typical prepper.
Although, I believe that the prepper community is widely diversified and each person's approach and definition will be as unique as the individual. And I am quickly learning that the majority of peppers are willing, and even eager, to share their knowledge and help you start your journey!
But what is prepping? And why should anyone be concerned with it?
Prepping, put simply, is just preparing for unexpected events. The more you are able to prep for different events, such as local weather events all the way to a castrophic worldwide event, and for varying periods of time, the more peace of mind you can bring to yourself and your family.
In most cases, people like to think and talk about this as much as they do life insurance! But interestingly, both have similar purposes. I'm a 31 year old, relatively healthy woman - I certainly don't expect anything to happen to me. Yet most people would agree its prudent to have life insurance; and I do! If I were to meet an untimely demise I would want to do everything possible to lessen the burden to my family and ensure they are taken care of.
Prepping has the same purpose; and just like with life insurance, you can purchase what makes sense for your needs and your finances, and add more as necessary or possible.
It can seem overwhelming and even down right scary to think about all the negative things that can happen. Like most things in life you can ignore it, let it immobilize you with fear, or prepare as much as you can; but your choice doesn't change if or when these events may happen. However, your choices can most certainly affect your outcome!
When someone asks me why would you prep, I really have to respond with a question of my own. Why would you not?
To date, no one has been able to respond with anything other than I don't have room or I don't have money. If you simply pick up one extra can of food, bag of beans, rice, etc and bring it home to stock in your pantry you will quickly accumulate a stock pile.
Yes there is a lot of other things and even skills to prep with other than food, and these will be discussed in later posts, but this is a great, simple, and easy way to get started!
I challenge everyone, if you have not already, to begin putting away some food. Another post will be coming soon for some tips and suggestions on how to begin your stockpile!
In the meantime I hope that you will give some consideration on how you can care for your family in the event of a short, local disruption to your every day life. If you already have made some plans or put them into action I'd love to hear about them!
