Pantry Basics

We are continuing a more in-depth view of the 5 Basic Steps to Starting a Food Stockpile. Let's take a look at number three:

Pantry Basics
As I have said before, it is important to store what you eat, and eat what you store.  If you are preparing for a short-term emergency in which you will be in your home primarily (3-5 days) than many of your pantry basics will not be a necessity.

Chances are you are mostly relying on canned goods that can simply be warmed, or maybe even some freeze-dried meals or MRE's.

However, as your preparedness journey continues, hopefully, you are storing up for more long term needs. Again, regardless if you believe in some type of end-of-world scenario or not, I would still strongly encourage you to continue your food storage/stockpiles for at least a one year back up.

Think of this as a type of insurance plan.  If you loose your source of income, this can even be insurance to keep your family fed.  There are no drawbacks to being prepared!

In thinking of long term storage, you know you probably aren't going to live off of canned beans for a year! You need to think of how you would prepare your meals and what type of basics you use today.

Things such as spices/herbs, salt, and pepper for flavoring. Sugar or some type of sweetener.  Flours, baking powder/soda, yeast, oils.

Here is a great site from LDS that can help you have a guide of a years supply of food for your family.  You can customize it by how many people are you in your group, including children (Note: I am not LDS, I just feel this is a good tool). While you may need to adjust this for your family, it is a point of reference to start.

How much do you feel you need to store for your family for a year's supply. What type of pantry basics and cooking supplies do you store?
